Probe Scientific launches revolutionary MicroEye® system
9 November 2007
Probe Scientific has formally launched MicroEye®, a revolutionary device to solve clinical problems and enhance healthcare through more efficient and effective blood sampling.
Probe Scientific launched MicroEye® at the 4th International Conference on Clinical Microdialysis in Cambridge, UK. The event was attended by over 250 of the world’s leading Medical researchers.
MicroEye® exploits a breakthrough in micro-separation technology by Probe Scientific that enables a wide range of substances in a patient’s bloodstream to be sampled and analysed continuously and in real time – without the necessity to remove blood from the patient.
MicroEye® uses a fibre about the diameter of a human hair with a microscopic membrane near its tip. Minimally invasive and non-injurious to the patient, the fibre’s tip is placed within a vein for up to 48 hours. Here the membrane mimics the normal physiological process of chemical transport taking place between tissues and fluids. Tiny traces of substances in the blood pass across the membrane, into a saline solution flowing through a U-tube within the fibre. The tube is connected to biosensors for immediate and automatic analysis – at the bedside.
The system delivers a radical improvement in blood sampling and enables point-of-care monitoring while avoiding the need for costly, time-consuming and labour intensive laboratory analysis. It reduces blood contact for researchers and healthcare workers, reducing the risk of transmission of blood borne pathogens. MicroEye® is easy to use and is applied with standard clinical procedures.
“MicroEye® also enables the care of a critically ill patient in intensive care to be greatly enhanced. For example, MicroEye® allows clinical staff to monitor the patient’s glucose level with high precision, to ensure it can be controlled within a very small window of variation,” says Neil Smith, Chief Executive of Probe Scientific.
“MicroEye® is engineered for safety and affordability. Whether you are measuring glucose or a wide range of analytes, MicroEye® solves many sampling problems and is available now, having gained accreditation to carry CE Marking for sale in Europe.”
The first MicroEye® units are now in production and the first order for this far-reaching innovation will be announced shortly.
